Hints Tips for TilingTiling is one of the most effective ways of improving the look of your bathroom, kitchen or other room/s. Ceramic tiles, used since ancient times, are hardwearing, easy to clean, easy to maintain, water resistant, hygienic and very attractive.
Types of Tiles
Our range of tiles include ceramic tiles, branded tiles, porcelain tiles, glass tiles, granite tiles, limestone tiles, marble tiles, mosaic tiles, slate tiles, stone tiles, travertine tiles, Victorian tiles, vinyl tiles and so on. Tiles made
in UK as well as imported from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, China and other parts of the world.
There is a wide choice of wall tiles, floor tiles, bathroom tiles, kitchen tiles and tiles for other rooms. Wall tiles
are usually thinner and less hard wearing than floor tiles. The maximum weight of tiling per m2 on Gypsum
Plaster is 20kg/m2. Floor tiles in kitchens and bathrooms usually have a rough or non slip surface
Popular brands of adhesives
We use tile adhesives and grout from all the leading suppliers such as Ardex, Bal, Biscem, Unibond, Mapei and major stores own brands.
There are many different types of adhesives for example ready mixed, cement based, flexible, waterproof or
water resistant, normal setting or fast setting, white or grey, indoor use or outdoor use, ones which accommodate movement and vibration and so on. Type of adhesive depends upon type of tile and the condition and temperature of surface. Outdoor floor requires an adhesive which is not affected by the elements, floors with underfloor heating would require an adhesive which is not affected by the changes in temperature. When fixing tiles onto timber floors, use flexible adhesive and flexbile grout to allow for movement. Porcelain tiles have low porosity and will not be suitable for ready mixed adhesive.
Types of bases or surfaces
Wall base
Concrete, plasterboard, skimmed surface, plastered surface, render, tiles backing board, blocks, bricks, plywood, marine ply
Floor base
Concrete, screed, levelling compound, underfloor heating, plywood, marine ply
All surfaces must be rigid, dry, sound, solid, stable, level, smooth and clean and free from any dust, dirt, grime
or grease. It must be free from any condition or substance that may interfere with the bond of the adhesive such
as concrete sealers, curing agents, wax, paint, etc. New plaster and new concrete should be left for at least 4 to
6 weeks and be thoroughly dry before tiling.
A tiler has to take into account the following - is tiling outside or inside?, to the wall or to the floor?, in a wet or
dry area?, exposed to heat or elements?, are tiles and adhesive appropriate for the surface? and so on
